The Court of Appeals is requesting a psychological report, which must be submitted by July 1, for Mario Përlleshaj, who is being tried as the author of the murder of Martin Cani and the injury of Luis Mecja.

The appeal has appointed two psychologists who will draft the psychological report after they have developed contact and assessment with the minors involved in the case.

This action comes as part of the reassessment of the circumstances of the event and the psychological state of those involved in the case.

Mario Përlleshaj has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of Martin Cani and the wounding of his friend, Luis Mecja. Përlleshaj was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the murder of Cani and 10 years for the attempted murder of the other minor, but after the sentences were combined, he was ultimately sentenced to 16 years in prison.

The Tirana Court's decision has been appealed by Përlleshaj's lawyers, who claim that he shot his underage friends in self-defense.

Martin Cani lost his life at noon on October 18 after being stabbed in the stomach by his peer, Mario Prelleshaj. The serious incident occurred after a conflict between two minors that escalated to the use of a knife. Mario Prelleshaj is suspected of having been in the same class as the victim, at the 9-year-old Fan Noli school. The conflict between the minors reportedly started in the schoolyard, and escalated outside its premises. The perpetrator pulled out a knife and shot 14-year-old Martin Cani.

After being stabbed, Cani approached the school, walked a few meters and after starting to lose blood, collapsed on the sidewalk in front of the school. As a result of his injuries, Cani died in hospital. The victim's close friend, Luis Mecja, was also injured in the altercation.

The serious incident was followed by a series of reactions, with Prime Minister Edi Rama declaring that he would close social networks like TikTok, thus identifying the "responsible" for the crime that occurred.
