Post by Vasil Toles:
Composer and musicologist Edmond Buharaja has passed away.
Edmond Buharaja, friend, companion, colleague, composer, musicologist, teacher, art intellectual has left us. It was gone suddenly, like the silence that comes after the last vertical chord that ends with a single tragic blow the times of symphonies.
It was soon for you dear Edi, very soon, you were going to the other side, to that world that is neither tonal nor atonal, but is simply the world without sounds, which you knew better than anyone.
You studied composition at ILA under the direction of your distinguished uncle, the composer Feim Ibrahimi. We were both in the same class. I saw you excel as a student in all aspects. You worked endlessly and without hours, because you had big goals. "Symfonia Alpine" was your thesis, a work on the motifs of Kadare that showed us that you wanted to climb higher.
At the beginning of the 1990s, I participated, together with a group of young composers, in the first activities aimed at a pluralistic musical reality in Albania. it focused on textures and formal structures without censorship, as an expression of creative freedom.
After many years, you returned to Albania as a lecturer at the University of Arts, introducing such essential subjects as Semiotics of music into school programs. You continued teaching and musicological activity in Kosovo and North Macedonia. He defended his doctorate in music in 2016, with the topic "Historiography of musical expression in Albania and the diaspora: From the human presence in the Albanian land to the century. XVI", a challenging and pioneering work on this topic. The publications continued, one of them dedicated to NIKETA OF RAMESIANA, the Albanian composer of the liturgy, which was published by the Academy of Sciences, etc. At the same time, he wrote music and directed students in composition and took an active part in forums dedicated to music in Albania and abroad. You had plans to work for another 100 years. You were recently appointed head of the department of composition, musicology and conducting at the Faculty of Music, at UART, a task that you would undoubtedly fulfill with other achievements.
But here, the metronome of life stopped violently.
Rest in peace dear friend, because you left behind a life and a work that will keep your name and the great surname Buharaja alive, as the great-grandson of Vexhi Buharaja that you were!
Condolences Elmira and family!
Condolences to Ed's friends and colleagues of the Faculty of Music at UART!
Farewell dear friend!
