A cause for identity: Aleksandër Llaçaj and the preservation of the
Illyrian breed dog, Moloss

By Kastriot Kotoni

Aleksandër Llaçaj is a boy from Vlora, who is best known on social networks and on YouTube channels or television channels, for a very special activity as a cynologist (a specialist in dog breeds or their researcher) in this case of the ancient Illyrian breed of dog "Mollos".

He began this journey as a collector of cattle horns, where according to him this pastoral heritage was also heading towards extinction and he collected or collected 300 such types. Closely linked to pastoral life since childhood, he had the idea of being a person interested in a very ancient dog breed such as the "Mollos" dog. The challenges of this man to search for this extinct breed were extraordinary. Days and nights in the South of Albania to follow this type of dog. Thus began the journey where in addition to the passion to breed this ancient dog breed, also the strength to identify this dog breed as indigenous to Albania. With an unyielding will, amidst prejudices and false myths, this boy did not give up on his goal, which has now become a national cause to identify this dog breed 'Mollos".

The "Mollos" dog has been written and spoken about at length, among the first to write was Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, in the book "Nature" and in all world and Albanian Encyclopedias, wherever Alexander the Great of Macedonia and the place of Illyrian Mollosia are mentioned as the origin of his mother Olympia.

With dedication, Aleksandr does not stop and creates the Albanian Cynologists Association with all the rules to represent himself in the local and pan-Albanian arena of this internationally known activity. An inner voice told him that he had to continue this activity, as beautiful and noble as it is related to animals and nature, as well as an identity drive that he had never noticed, what was done around the world to identify animals as identities of ancient history. The "Mollo Dog" is now passing the survival projects thanks to the insistence of Aleksandr with his friends in the creation of the Federation of Albanian Cynologists, now it was necessary to speak in scientific language, a project was needed, not only to preserve this dog breed pure, but also to protect it from various diseases.

The first information coming from Western laboratories to confirm the autochthonous nature of this Illyrian breed in university laboratories excited Aleksandar and others, which increased his claims and responsibility. He needs broader cooperation with other federations and associations formed after him and with local and central government bodies. Many doors were closed to this boy, sometimes by ignorance and sometimes by the malice of people who tried to deny the fact of the existence of this autochthonous Albanian breed, although Albanian society had been coexisting with animals for thousands of years and especially with the dog and that "Mollos" who had served him, had protected him from savages and loneliness.

This native Albanian breed must be preserved not only by Aleksandr with the Federation of Albanian Cynologists across the border, but also with special laws and funds from the Ministry of Environment. The help from various individuals in Albania and the Federation of Kosovo Cynologists are like the “serum” that is keeping alive this patriotic initiative of Aleksandër Llaç and his friends, in breeding the Illyrian dog “Mollos”. An increased awareness and attention to this patriotic initiative would be the least that people from different walks of life could do, why not also support this federation with philanthropy. This activity first has immediate needs to ensure the annual food of 20 dogs, in addition to guaranteeing various medications, but also to perform genetic analyzes abroad. A single individual with two, three or 10 people cannot keep this ancient breed of dog 'Mollos' alive. It is enough for writers and artists and filmmakers and journalists to become aware, to touch with their work this extraordinary Albanian history that is rare in world literature, it would make people turn their heads and help this Molossian-Illyrian-Albanian canine association.
