Ahmet Kalaja, the imam of the Dine Hoxha Mosque in Tirana, has transformed the pulpit of the shrine into a center of propaganda and a personal audience. Instead of liturgy and religious teaching, he distributes political messages, advice that is not related to religion and attacks on citizens, such as the recent case with the writer Ben Blushi. The violence against the mufti of Tirana in the mosque premises, his radicalized audience on social networks and his silence after the incidents show the degradation of a religious institution that should maintain neutrality, calm and morality. Kalaja does not act as a cleric, but as a political influencer who uses the mosque as a personal stage.
Albania has long since slipped into a deep quagmire, succumbing to the secularism of the state. For decades, religious liturgy has no longer been performed from the podiums of Albanian mosques, but political propaganda with hate speech.
Although the frequency of imams who became viral stars for years has decreased, after commissioning luxurious video productions with drones and effects, where they distributed political and propaganda lectures, there are still some of them who do not stop their activity as influencers.
One of them is the imam of the Dine Hoxha mosque on Kavaja Street in Tirana, Ahmet Kalaja, officially a cleric of the Albanian Muslim Community.
He has become very famous on social networks. Blendi Fevziu promoted him on his page as a phenomenon of Tik-Tok, Instagram and Facebook. Kalaja, with his smile of an audiovisual character, did not hide his pleasure at the honor that the famous television host did him.
A clergyman's communication with believers through technology is not an isolated phenomenon. It is normal for a clergyman to communicate on social networks, to maintain contact with the community. Catholic and Orthodox priests, evangelical lecturers, Jewish rabbis, Hindu and Buddhist gurus do the same. But the topic they address is related only to their profession. With the explanation of holy books, the remembrance of religious days and the involvement of the believer in the language of religion.
In simple terms, their communications are part of their daily routine. Meanwhile, the imam of Tirana's most important mosque, Ahmet Kalaja, speaks little or nothing about the liturgy. He preaches about social relationships outside the community, giving prescriptions for psychological or medical problems such as premature ejaculation or frequent masturbation.
Even the holy place of prayer, apart from the takbirs that he loudly amplifies from loudspeakers, not only during the five daily prayers, has been turned into a political and propaganda club.
Almost two years ago, a senior cleric of the Albanian Muslim Community was publicly raped in the premises of the Dine Hoxha mosque. In February 2024, the mufti of Tirana, Lauren Luli, was physically attacked in the mosque. The perpetrators of the violence were friends of Ahmet Kallaja and part of his spoiled audience on social media. The imam did not give any statement or distance.
This was not the only incident. Kalaja constantly incites propagandistic discourse and clashes in his lectures. An example is the recent verbal attack on the writer Ben Blushi, who is a free citizen in a country where the Constitution and the law guarantee freedom of thought.
What business does an imam have publicly attacking a writer from a shrine of God?
This is not done even by internationally renowned clerics in the Islamic faculties of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Syria, who have spent their entire lives studying Islamic jurisprudence.
Only Iran, for political, not religious reasons, has issued a fatwa for the death penalty of a writer like Salman Rushdie, an act of a political regime and not of classical ulema.
Ahmet Kalaja is neither a state leader nor a political authority. He is simply an imam who uses the mosque pulpit as a personal podium and not as a place of religious service.
Kalaja is close to politics. He is connected to Taulant Balla and Erion Veliaj, who use him as an influential actor, while he himself has never publicly come out to support Veliaj, except for sending him dates in prison.
With all due respect to his religious function, Kalaja has obvious ideological limitations. Before dealing with Ben Blushi or with people's intimate matters, he should read the holy books and only lead the prayer. He is not a guru or a figure of the world of spectacle. Të papërgjegjshëm.
Ja, ju i doni ata, por ata nuk ju duan ju dhe ju i besoni të gjithë librave (ndërsa ata jo). Kur ata ju takojnë, thonë: “Edhe ne besojmë” e, kur mbeten vetëm, nga mllefi ndaj jush, ata i kafshojnë majat e gishtave me dhëmbë. Thuaju: “Plasni me mllefin tuaj”. Vërtet, Allahu e di mirë ç’kanë në gjokset e tyre.

Ne te gjithe e dime se ben blushi gjithmone eshte kunder fese Myslymane,dhe kete liber e ka bere qe te hedhi balte mbi ate fe. Por le te shkruaj sa te doje eshte puna e tij..por une perseri jam kurioz; perse ju djeg ju te pmfletit se cfar paska thene hoxhe Ahmet Kalaja?
Keta jane hoxhe si politikanet te nxjerre nga sistemi qe kaluam dhe o burra kush te zhvase. Ne vitet e para te dhjerokracise Tirana u be kosh plehrash e qelbte nga papastertite. Tani Tirana eshte e paster por bie ere me te qelbur nga fryma e politikaneve, kodosho-hoxhallareve e prifterinjve qe kane helmuar popullin nga trute e stomaku e te gjithe vjellin e vjellin.
