Berisha forgets 'heartfelt friend' Viktor Orban, congratulates new
Sali Berisha

From his former enthusiasm for Viktor Orbán, Sali Berisha has declared immediate support for his rival, Péter Magyar, who won the elections in Hungary yesterday.

Berisha seems to have decided never to be left without a "heartfelt friend" in Hungary, regardless of who wins the elections.

"Yesterday the Hungarian people, in a free and fair electoral process, voted overwhelmingly for the alternative presented by Péter Magyar, chairman of the center-right TISZA party, a member of the EPP. On this occasion, I congratulate Mr. Magyar on his electoral victory and the great trust he received from the citizens of his country. I express my readiness and that of the Democratic Party for a fruitful cooperation with TISZA, both on a bilateral level and on that of the EPP, in the best interest of our two countries," the leader of the DP wrote.

Just a few years ago, in 2022, Berisha was elevating Orbán to a pedestal, calling him a historic leader and the Democratic Party’s greatest friend in 30 years. His fourth victory was, according to Berisha at the time, “spectacular” and a reward for major reforms.

"Excellent victory of Prime Minister Victor Orban! Friends, yesterday in the general parliamentary elections in Hungary, Prime Minister Victor Orban and his Fidesz party achieved a spectacular victory. They received 53.1% of the votes against the left and extreme right coalition, which received 35% of the votes. With this excellent and historic victory, Viktor Orban receives his fourth consecutive mandate as Prime Minister of Hungary, a reward for the great success of his comprehensive reforms. Albania and the Democratic Party have in Prime Minister Victor Orban and his party the best friends of these 30 years, so I invite you, dear friends, to convey to Prime Minister Orban and his sister party, the DPA, our most heartfelt congratulations for this historic victory for Hungary!", Berisha wrote on April 4, 2022.

But politics, as always, has a selective memory.

In April 2026, before the ink of former glories had dried, Berisha turned the page with a speed that would envy any sprint athlete.

Now the spotlight is on Péter Magyar, whom he congratulates on his "electoral victory" and for the "great trust of Hungarian citizens," while Orbán is mentioned more as an example of how to accept defeat.

The irony deepens even further when Berisha uses his former ally to give lectures on democracy, comparing him to Edi Rama. So, from ardent praiser of Orbán, to a neutral commentator on his defeat, a transformation that occurs without any reflection on past statements.

"It is worth noting that, in stark contrast to Edvin Kristaq Rama, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not hold an electoral farce, but free and fair elections. He did not forgive voters two billion euros in fines and interest two days before the vote to buy their votes and alter the election result. He did not give pensioners, who made up half of the voters, "gifts" of 100 euros in exchange for their votes, as Edi Rama did in the midst of the campaign for the May 11 elections.

He did not use criminal organizations and drug cartels to terrorize citizens and control their will, as "Ramaduro" did in Albania. He did not decree the planting of 29 thousand hectares of cannabis for votes, as the narco-dictator did in Albania. His government did not build a caricature electoral commission like Albania's, but established a commission with broad representation of the political spectrum. Finally, Prime Minister Orbán did not put 90% of the country's media under control and did not block TikTok like Edi Rama; on the contrary, Hungary's most watched television channels supported his opponents," Berisha writes in today's post as he congratulates the new Hungarian prime minister.
