Officials in Brussels have long accused Orbán of undermining key pillars of Hungarian democracy, from the judiciary to the media, and of indirectly helping Putin block vital EU support for Kiev.
While everyone is still waiting to hear Russia and Vladimir Putin's reaction to the results of yesterday's elections in Hungary, Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's unofficial envoy to Washington, has made his first reaction to Viktor Orban's defeat.
"This will only accelerate the decline of the EU," he said in response to far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
"Check if I'm right in 4 months.", he said.
Dmitriev's official role is as Executive Director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, a sovereign wealth fund of at least $10 billion created by the Russian government to co-invest in the country's economy.
His name came up in the US-Russia talks on Ukraine last year, when he held talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff.
Meanwhile, Hungary's outgoing Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has admitted defeat in the election, describing the result as clear and painful for his camp.
"The results are clear, it is a painful moment for us," Orbán declared, while also confirming that he had congratulated the rival political force led by Péter Magyar on its victory.
This reaction comes after the publication of the official results, which mark an important turning point in the Hungarian political scene.
Viktor Orbán admitted defeat, with tears in his eyes, adding that “Regardless of how it ended, we will serve our country and the Hungarian nation from the opposition.”
If the current margin of victory is maintained, Péter Magyar will secure a super-majority in parliament that will allow him to change many of Orban's controversial laws.
Orbán's departure comes as a major relief to the European Union, whose systemic weaknesses he has exposed and exploited for years, most recently by blocking €90 billion in European support for Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen was the first to congratulate Orban's rival with the words "The heart of Europe is beating stronger in Hungary tonight."
Officials in Brussels have long accused Orbán of undermining key pillars of Hungarian democracy, from the judiciary to the media, and of indirectly helping Putin block vital EU support for Kiev.
