The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, admitted today that the Democratic Party has signed for the candidacy of Endri Shabani in the race for People's Advocate, thus reversing the position of the day before, when the DP declared that the signatures were placed incorrectly.
In a statement to the media after leaving the Parliament, Berisha explained that the signatures were given during a period when Shabani supported the candidacy of Florjan Binaj and when, according to him, there was "a complete moral coalition" between the political forces.
"I'm not saying that Endri Shabani didn't get the signatures. Endri Shabani got them during a period when he supported Florian Bina, because I can't say that it wasn't a complete moral coalition of all political forces. But then a series of problems emerged that proved that the one who had that vocabulary as an opposition member of the opposition, wasn't just that, but was a person with complete ties to Edi Rama," he said.
Berisha underlined that despite his position, Shabani holds the position of party chairman, which according to him contradicts the standards that a candidate for Ombudsman must meet. He added that the Laws Committee had decided that MPs should not sign more than one candidate, a decision which the DP has implemented by officially withdrawing all signatures.
"At the very least, Endri Shabani is the chairman of a party, I'm not taking the other side. But the Laws Committee decided that MPs will not have the right to sign for more than one candidate. In accordance with this decision, the DP parliamentary group sent a letter to the Assembly informing it that it withdraws every signature for every candidate. And, surprisingly, this decision of the Laws Committee was rejected by the majority without any decision. It made it non-existent without making any decision in any institution. Why did it do this? Because they were losing signatures for Endri Shabani," he declared.
