The bust of Mitsotakis in Dropull, will the Greek prime minister fall into

In October, the new square in the center of Dervician village in Dropull is expected to be inaugurated. Besides its complete retraining, perhaps the most important element is the placement of the bust of Konstantinos Mitsotakis, the former Greek Prime Minister who visited Albania 33 years ago. This investment by the Albanian government was publicly promised during the visit of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Dropull in December 2022 by the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama.

We remind you that Kyriakos Mitsotakis is the son of Kostandinos Mitsotakis. Edi Rama mentioned the inauguration of the bust a few days ago when he gave an interview for the prestigious Greek "Kathimerini". But Tirana-Athens relations are no longer as before because of the "Beleri" case. Greece has repeatedly threatened Albania with blocking EU integration if it does not release from prison the elected mayor of Himara, who was arrested for buying votes.

The climax was reached during the informal dinner in Athens with the leaders of the Western Balkan countries, when Mitsotakis did not send an invitation to Edi Rama. In these conditions, as the square in Dervician is taking shape day by day, it remains questionable whether Kyriakos Mitsotakis will come to Albania again or not, to participate in the inauguration of his father's bust.

This investment, which has more of a symbolic value in the minority, seems to have come to Edi Rama's path and is more like, let's say, a "political trap" towards the head of the government in Athens. The most interested in this case for the square to be inaugurated, for the bust to be placed and for the Prime Minister of Greece to participate in the ceremony, is Edi Rama, not Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose father is being honored in Dropull.

Rama seeks to appear through this event as a European leader, completely redeemed from nationalistic complexes or prejudices and to show the Greek public opinion that he is so open-minded, therefore he raises the bust of the father of the Prime Minister of Greece. Of course, Rama did not foresee that things would turn out like this with Fredi Beleri and he would have a rift with official Athens, but he intends to use the square with the bust of Kostandinos Mitsotakis as an act to complicate the current prime minister of Greece.

If Kyriakos Mitsotakis would arrive in Dropull in October and shake hands with Edi Rama, all the rhetoric of his government since May of this year regarding Fredi Beleri's case would of course be undone and Athens' pressure would be invalidated. . Even more so, when it seems that Beleri is heading towards losing the right to take an oath and to ever be the mayor of the Himara Municipality.

In the middle of the month of September, the term established by law to take the oath expires. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is unlikely to fall into Edi Rama's trap, however it remains to be seen until October how events will unfold. See footage below of what's happening in Dervician Square. ©LAPSI.al
