Albania is gripped by crime and corruption, turning elections into a facade for the legitimization of criminal interests. Money from drugs, corruption and illegal gambling is invested in luxury towers in Tirana, while the middle class is shrinking to its limits, the population is leaving. Change seems increasingly an illusion.
Albania is today under the clutches of criminal groups, which control more and more economic and political territory. In this context, any attempt at free and fair elections has become an illusion and a utopia, while the electoral process itself is being used to maintain the status quo and guarantee the interests of economic and political power.
None of the political forces are really fighting for change, because the parties have become part of this criminal mechanism. People connected to crime have never felt safer than today, while any black money obtained from drugs, state corruption, illegal gambling and other criminal activities is invested in high-rise towers and luxury mansions in Tirana, laundering black capital and strengthening the political and economic influence of the oligarchs.
On the other hand, the government has set up a corrupt system through tenders, concessions and PPPs, buying the silence or cooperation of key structures and individuals in institutions and society. Under these circumstances, no one has a real interest in changing this situation.
The result is clear: the poor and the rich take the spoils, the rich increase their wealth, while the middle class, which has historically been the engine of social change, has shrunk dramatically. The poor no longer have any hope and are choosing to leave Albania en masse every day, leaving their place to foreigners.
This phenomenon is a wake-up call for all those who still have hope for a better Albania. If immediate and decisive action is not taken to sever the link between crime and politics, the risk is that Albania will forever remain hostage to criminal groups and the financial oligarchy, where elections will be just a facade to legitimize their power./ Pamphlet
