In a post on social media, independent MP Marjana Koçeku, known as "Neomalsorja", has shared an interview given to the British newspaper Financial Times, where she talks about the recent protests in Albania, immigration and her decision to engage in politics.

Koçeku writes that in the interview she expressed a belief that, according to her, she has felt and experienced for a long time.

"In this article, in the Financial Times, I expressed what I have long felt and which I have also experienced as a personal story: the struggle of our generation is not to look for another, better place to live, but to make the country to which we belong more livable," she says.

The statement has been interpreted as a criticism of the way of governance and living conditions in the country.

What the Financial Times writes:

The Financial Times article focuses on the protests that have erupted following objections to the development project in Zvërnec, noting that works in the area appear to have been temporarily suspended.

The newspaper also recalls that the European Parliament, in mid-June, called for a moratorium on all new construction works and permits in Albania's protected areas, and demanded the repeal of the amendment known as the "five-star".

According to the article, Koçek sees the wave of protests as a sign of a change in the mentality of young Albanians.

"Our parents raised us with the idea that happiness lies beyond borders, but the protests are showing that Albanians are seeing their land as a place to live, rather than a place to leave," she is quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

The article also describes the personal journey of the MP, who grew up in an isolated village in northern Albania, which, according to the newspaper, can only be reached by boat. She studied in Italy, but then returned to Albania to develop a sustainable tourism project in her family home, before entering politics.

The Financial Times notes that last month Koçeku left the Socialist Party over her stance against the Zvërnec coastline project, becoming the only independent MP in the Assembly. According to the article, she stated that she had received threats after this decision.
