Former minister Etilda Gjonaj has been elected a representative by the Assembly of the Republic of Albania in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, an institution for human rights and democracy.
She is the full-fledged General Rapporteur on violence against women at the Commission for Equality and Non-Discrimination from September 15 to 2023.
On October 9, she also gave her speech in the assembly regarding the event for Kosovo.
"We are deeply concerned about the situation created in Kosovo after the organized Serbian military and criminal attack in the north of the country on September 24.
We had a discussion in the semi-cycle a few months ago about the dialogue and de-escalation of tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, but despite this, the escalation happened.
I want to appeal today not to reckless minds, but to all reasonable and cool minds, the delegations here, that we must be freed from the fever of nationalism.
It is not in the interest of our people. Any situation that endangers the lives of citizens, the sovereignty of the territory, democracy and human rights is not in the interest of the region, of Europe.
Fundamentalists are dangerous for democracy, freedom and society. We are seeing this in Kosovo, Ukraine and just two days ago in Israel.
We cannot allow another Crimea or Donbas in the north of Kosovo.
Today I saw an exhibition of pictures of children from Ukraine. We cannot allow the stories of Marieka and Mariana, 5 and 9 years old, and other children in Ukraine who have been killed, deported or orphaned because their parents have been killed, to repeat themselves.
The Serbian people do not want this, but they must get rid of nationalism. I even want to ask my Serbian colleagues, as politicians, but also as parents, if they want and want their children to be in war, or even to live the anxiety of war. I am absolutely sure that it is not. The Council of Europe was created as an organization of values to promote and protect this peace, democracy and fundamental values, such as the right to freedom.
We cannot question the right to freedom. Here we are not talking about privileges, but about people's lives. In the twenty-first century, this kind of ghost created in Ukraine cannot and should not be allowed to be repeated in the Balkans. The Parliamentary Assembly must condemn this action and demand a full investigation and impose to all members that any similar attack is a red line.
As a base, we must remind the European Union that the clear perspective of the countries of the Western Balkans must be concrete, the same for countries like Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.
We, as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, must make every effort for Kosovo to become a member of the Council of Europe.
This is the moment," she said.
