The November 9th by-elections in Vlora appear to be taking place with a divided opposition. Gjergj Nika, a former figure in the Democratic Party and then part of Lulzim Basha's group, has officially announced his candidacy as an independent for mayor of this city today.
In a long statement on social media, Nika has articulated strong criticism of both the Socialist Party and the local Democratic Party, accusing them of political bargaining and excluding honest voices from public life.
Gjergj Nika's full statement:
" I am running in the local by-elections in Vlora, because despite the fact that they are elections for local government, they are actually deeply political elections."
Vlora needs true, honest and accountable representation. Vlora is not a municipality that is simply managed, it is a city that must be freed from narrow interests, political and economic capture, corruption and clientelism, which have held it hostage for almost 30 years.
The left has turned Vlora into a private property, where the government does not serve the citizens, but the friends of the government. Tenders, appointments, decision-making, everything revolves around a vicious circle of interests while the ordinary citizen is powerless in the daily display of arrogance and abuse.
On the other hand, the right has almost disappeared from the political map of the city. For years, the Democrats in Vlora have been mocked and trampled upon by imposed candidates who have no connection with the Democratic Party, its history and our city, with the right or with the principles we represent.
Candidates who were the product of the bargaining of the leadership and its entourage, not of the will of true democrats.
I have been active in politics and engaged in the City Council, a strong and unwavering voice in defense of the citizens of Vlorë, their rights and the public interest even when others were silent. I have always been on the side of honest people who want a better, fairer and freer city.
Today I am running because I no longer want to see my city without a voice and the Democrats without dignity. I am running because I do not want the DP to be undone by grotesque individuals!
I am running because in recent years, the leadership of the local branch of the DP has systematically removed the most capable, most dedicated, most honest, and most free people, to keep only the obedient and idealists close, whose idealism it uses.
I'm running because I no longer want to see Vlora held hostage by a party that can only govern for its clients, nor by an opposition that waits in line for appointments, not for ideals.
Today, Vlora needs a new alternative, a candidacy that does not divide, but unites.
I am the candidate today and tomorrow for the unifying mayor, for all the citizens of Vlora, who for a long time have not had a voice and representation. I will be the voice of all those who are tired of servility, of bargaining, of faces that never go away! I will be the candidate today and tomorrow for the citizens, not the bargaining.
Therefore, I invite all disengaged citizens, sincere oppositionists, true democrats, and disappointed leftists to join me in this effort to turn Vlora into a city that belongs to the citizens, not the political clientele.
A free city begins with a free vote! ”
