May 9 - Victory over Fascism Day - has been celebrated in Azerbaijan since 1945. About 600,000 Azerbaijani soldiers, or roughly one-fifth of the entire population of Soviet Azerbaijan, fought in World War II. The public holiday is a chance for Azerbaijanis to honor surviving veterans and the memory of the many soldiers who lost their lives in battle.

Since more than 80% of the Soviet Union's oil enterprises were located near Baku, Azerbaijan was one of the first target fronts to be attacked by German forces in World War II. If Azerbaijani oil had not been sent to the front, then the contribution of the Soviet Union to this war would not have been so obvious. After being ordered to capture Baku, the Nazis launched Operation Edelweiss on September 25, 1942 in an attempt to gain control of Azerbaijan's oil reserves to prevent refueling for Soviet troops. Despite losing over 100,000 soldiers in the war, the Nazis were never able to gain control of the region.
During World War II, Azerbaijani partisans were also fighting in France, Italy, Ukraine, and Belarus, and today memorials dedicated to Azerbaijani servicemen can be found in a number of places.

The late president, Heydar Aliyev, said at the solemn event dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Victory in 1995: "The special role of Azerbaijan in achieving this victory is that the oil of the Republic of Azerbaijan was one of the most important factors for the success of that war. At that time, 75 percent of the oil and over 80 percent of the fuel produced in the Soviet Union during the war was produced in Azerbaijan. A lot of oil was produced thanks to the selfless work of oil workers of Azerbaijan. Without a doubt, it is not difficult to conclude that without Azerbaijani fuel, the war of engines and technology would not have been so successful. At that time, high-quality gasoline, kerosene and other petroleum products were invented by Azerbaijani scientists and produced and supplied by Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan and our people have always been against war, violence, territorial claims and, thus, have always stood in defense of their homeland. Unfortunately, after the restoration of independence in 1991, Azerbaijan faced a new war with its neighbor, this time within the territory of the former Soviet Union. Today we already have 2 days of victory in our calendar - May 9, 1945 and November 8, 2020. I am convinced that our next joint victories should not be on the battlefield, but in the arena of peace building and regional cooperation.
