For the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, the government has no power to release him from prison to take the oath, as this is the duty of the court.
This is what Prime Minister Edi Rama declared in an interview with the Greek media Kathimerini, about the much-discussed issue of the arrest of Beler, for buying votes.
'Based on what we know he was arrested red handed with his vote buying ring. A democratic state cannot interfere in the justice system. Obtain permission to take the oath, in the Albanian legislation there is no power of the prime minister to release from prison a person prevented from leaving the prison, this does not exist. On the other hand, he and his lawyers have to go through the court. There is no such thing as having to get permission while in custody, for a crime in flagrante delicto, while the court has refused it. At the three levels of the court he was not released! Where does the government or the Albanian government come into this. These structures are independent from me and the government. I invite you to find a personal comment of mine and I have never commented on the actions of these new institutions. I told my people, this could be painful,- said Rama.
The head of the Albanian government was asked about the harsh language towards Beler in the campaign, where he said that he is not proud of what he said, but it has nothing to do with what happened.
' I had strong tongues because of some statements he made. I've said things on the campaign trail that I don't feel good about as it relates to what happened. I learned about his arrest when the police were in action. I called the police and said what is this. They told me that we arrested them for buying votes. I told you better, you should be sure of what you are doing and have evidence.'- said Rama.
