If we once thought that Albania had emerged from the shadow of a power that functioned on the principle of “family”, now we only have an “update” of the old system. It seems that Albanian political history has a surprising ability to turn characters and events into a recurring cycle, where powerful women in the shadows take on decisive roles. And who better than Linda Rama can be compared to Nexhmije Hoxha? The prime minister’s wife, until recently, has tried to sell herself as a quiet academic and intellectual who does not interfere with her husband’s affairs.
But time is showing that she has strong ambitions in managing power, especially in strategic appointments to public institutions and tenders. And it is not only her influence behind the scenes that is striking, but also the fact that all her meetings and public appearances are carefully organized by Endri Fuga, Edi Rama's main propagandist, who makes sure that Linda becomes news in all the media that serve the prime minister.

One of the institutions most affected by Linda Rama’s “invisible hand” seems to be RTSH. For a long time, this propaganda institution (which we sometimes confuse with a public television!) has experienced numerous changes, but it has never been so “careful” in choosing the people who will direct programming and news. The newspaper “Sot” reported that the race for the new director of RTSH already has a predetermined winner, which is journalist Eni Vasili, known for her closeness to Linda Rama. The scheme was revealed after the sudden resignation of Iris Luarasi, who left the race without explanation, while Vasili immediately entered as a candidate, paving the way for an appointment directed from above. Linda Rama’s preferences led Prime Minister Edi Rama to reach the next bargain with the DP.
An entire council was dismissed just for Linda's whims, and names that come mainly from circles of power and direct political influence were installed in Parliament. Fatjon Hoxhalli, a close government official with experience working with Niko Pelesh and the socialist parliamentary group, was elected its chairman. Meanwhile, most of the new members come from political circles, turning the institution that should have been independent into a mechanism of complete control by the government. Now only the procedural issues remain for Linda's friend, Eni Vasili, to take over the leadership of RTSH. And as always, all these moves are carefully orchestrated by Endri Fuga, who guarantees that the message gets across and that no one questions Linda Rama's role behind the scenes.
Other institutions
But RTSH is not the only institution where Linda Rama has extended her influence. From the boards of state-owned banks to other institutions, it seems that she has created a network of confidants who, in one form or another, know that the “way forward” passes through her approval. As Edi Rama extends his mandate with the ease of someone changing the rules of a board game, in the shadows, Linda decides who will be the government’s favorite friend. Ogerta Manastirliu, Frida Krifca, AKSHI director Mirlinda Karçanaj, or ministers Anila Denaj, Albana Koçiu and Belinda Balluku are simply different chapters of the same book.
Tender allegations
The scandal goes all the way to tenders. The accusations recently made by former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj have highlighted an organized scheme, where Linda Rama not only has influence on strategic appointments, but is also involved in issues related to the financial management of the government. According to Ahmetaj, AKSHI has been transformed into a “private garden” of Linda and Edit, where contracts and public funds are treated as personal property of a narrow circle of people loyal to her. “AKSHI is the private garden of the prime minister, where people connected to his family do whatever they please. Linda Rama has not stopped only in Albanian politics, but has also entered the international scene strongly. Recently, she was present at a summit in Abu Dhabi, where she met with Alex Soros' wife, Huma Abedin. After the change of the American administration in January, Soros is in the spotlight. She has also written the foreword to the book of Kamala Harris, the candidate who challenged Trump for US president. The promotion was accompanied by praise for Harris' figure, while his foreword written by Linda Rama, was to the detriment of the latter, as the Democratic candidate failed to win her race for the White House. Moreover, she yesterday participated in the tributes for the father of the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi. While Edi Rama held secondary meetings in Berat, Linda respected Thaçi by giving support to the family of her husband's friend in these difficult moments.
