Bargaining with Gjadri, EC gives "OK" to Meloni to return him to the

Official Tirana no reaction to the change of the pact by Meloni...

The European Commission has given the "OK" to Giorgia Meloni to turn the Gjadri camp into a prison for refugees.

According to " Corriere Della Sera ", the EC has stated that it has been informed about the latest developments and plans of the Italian government and the draft signed by Meloni.

" The measure is in principle compatible with European law, because Italian legislation will be applied at the centre. We are also monitoring the implementation of the Italy-Albania protocol ," a Commission spokesman said when asked about the draft that the Italian government approved last Friday.

" As for innovative solutions, we have said that we are ready to support them, always if they are in line with EU rules and international fundamental rights law ," added Markus Lammert, spokesman for the European Commission for Home Affairs and Immigration.

His response came in response to a journalist's question, who had sought confirmation of what Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said, that the European Commission had not raised objections to the Italian decree transforming migrant facilities into Temporary Detention Centers.

The measure stipulates that immigrants can stay in the facilities for up to 18 months, the time needed to complete deportation procedures in their countries of origin.

In addition to the problem of costs, the decree has raised concerns because the practice of transferring migrants to countries that are neither of origin nor transit is not provided for by current laws.

But the Italian initiative, Lammert stressed, is "different from the concept of a repatriation center" that the Commission proposed in a new European regulation on March 11 and which provides that the legislation of the third country hosting them on its territory can be applied to these entities.

Brussels, the official recalled, "is working on defining the legal framework and minimum requirements for this type of innovative solution ", which should be based " on a detailed international agreement and should only concern third countries that respect human rights and the principle of non-refoulement ".

So it seems that we are dealing with a big bargain with the Gjadri camp. From a refugee center, it will soon turn into a prison and the absurdity is that the Albanian government is just silent. Although the plan was changed, there is no reaction from Tirana. /Pamphlet
