The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during a conversation with citizens on his Facebook, declared that the opposition would not vote against Albania's integration into the European Union. He said that the DP's position supports the integration process, but according to him, the country does not meet the criteria required by the EU, with the exception of the geopolitical one.
Berisha said that after the war in Ukraine and other international developments, a conviction has been created in Brussels that the Western Balkan countries should move closer to the European Union. According to him, this has led to the integration process not relying only on the merits and performance of the aspiring countries, but also on geopolitical factors.
In his comments, the DP leader said that the resolution adopted between the SP and the DP does not contain assessments of the work of the government or parliament, but only requests and duties for Albanian institutions. Berisha stated that, even if Albania were close to membership in the coming months, the Democratic Party would not oppose it, since according to him, European integration is a national issue and not a political clash.
"The SP-PD resolution expresses what we, as the Democratic Party, have declared that we support the integration process, although, I emphasize, apart from the geopolitical criterion, Albania does not meet any criteria. Remember this our position, our main thesis.
After the war in Ukraine and other changes, the opinion was created in Brussels that the Western Balkans should be integrated without delay, and the impression was created that the platform of merit-based integration was being sacrificed due to the dominance of the geopolitical factor.
We, telling the truth, say that we agree on integration, but apart from geopolitics we do not meet any criteria. If you read the resolution, from the first line to the last you will find absolutely no assessment of the work of the parliament or the government. Zero. From the first line to the last the request, the task for the parliament and the government is listed.
So, if we insist that moving towards integration requires a merit-based process, based on performance, I believe we are protecting the interests of citizens. On the other hand, our opponents did not dare to defend even a single achievement of theirs. Read it.
"I want to tell you that if we were asked tomorrow whether Albania would integrate into the EU in five months as it is, we would not vote against it, because this is not a matter of inter-party struggle, but a matter of the nation. Integration is known to be based on merit, read the last paragraph that says this," said Berisha.
