Prime Minister Edi Rama has guaranteed that Vlora International Airport will open despite the delays and problems that have accompanied the project, linking the situation to internal disputes within the concession company.
Rama's statement comes at a time when the project has been accompanied by debates and tensions between the Albanian government and businessman Behgjet Pacolli, whose company is part of the consortium that has undertaken the construction of the airport. In recent weeks, the parties have exchanged public accusations regarding the progress of the investment and responsibilities for the delays created.
Speaking from Rinas Airport, Rama acknowledged that the project has encountered obstacles, but stressed that they are not related to Albanian institutions.
"Everyone is informed about some delays caused not by the state, but by internal company reasons at Vlora airport. The Ministry has taken the appropriate steps and our objective is unwavering, that Vlora airport will definitely open and will not be a prey to disputes within the company," declared the Prime Minister.
Rama's message is seen as an indirect response to the open debate with Pacolli about the fate of the project, as the head of government sought to provide guarantees that the airport will be put into operation despite the conflict between shareholders or the problems of the construction company.
From Rinas, Rama also announced that the government is in the preparatory phase for opening the competition for the Gjirokastra airport, which according to him will have a touristic and seasonal character.
