Elisa Spiropali put an end to speculation about a possible departure from the Socialist Party and declared that her political battle will take place within the SP. In a statement to the media before the start of the plenary session this Tuesday, Spiropali appeared determined to remain part of the SP, while openly challenging the prime minister by confirming that she is working on the draft of "New Albania", an idea that she has presented in recent weeks as her vision for changing the way the state and politics function.
"We are working. What is important is what we will do for Albania. I am in the SP, I have been in the SP and I will always be in the SP. The SP should include all those who seek a better Albania, have done it historically, have done it today. Let those who have brought damage to the SP go where they belong ," said Spiropali.
The statement comes at a time when the relationship between Spiropali and Rama remains one of the most visible clashes within the Socialist Party. For months, the MP has publicly articulated criticism of the way the party functions, raising concerns about the lack of internal debate, the centralization of decision-making and the need for a new political model.
The clash between them began immediately after Spiropali's departure from the position of minister, a period during which she and Edi Rama had direct debates in several parliamentary group meetings that were later made public in the media.
Then, during the wave of anti-government protests, Spiropali hardened her tone towards the prime minister. She criticized Rama's length of power and demanded changes in the way he governs, arguing that the Socialist Party should open up to the competition of ideas and dissenting views.
A few weeks ago, Spiropali first floated the idea of the "New Albania" draft. In her public reflection, she called for a new political agreement for the country, with more competition, limitations on power, strengthening of institutions, an increased controlling role of Parliament, a more representative electoral system, and a political culture where, according to her, "rotation is not seen as a catastrophe and victory is not seen as ownership."
In today's statement, Spiropali confirmed that work on this draft continues, although he did not make public details on its content or deadlines for presentation.
