The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, has spoken about the measures taken by the EU against Kosovo, which she described as unnecessary, stressing that they convey a dangerous message.
The European bloc has warned that this week it will communicate punitive measures against Kosovo due to the failure to take the steps that have been requested to reduce tensions in the north of Kosovo.
"We think that such measures are unnecessary because it is very important that in such a situation we are in, the message is sent clearly and without any possibility of misunderstanding to those who created the unrest in the northern part of Kosovo, in our four municipalities" , said Gërvalla.
The Kosovar chief diplomat said that these decisions of Brussels are sending dangerous messages to Belgrade.
"Personally, I think that such messages are dangerous because they can create the impression that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic can continue in the same way, to destabilize not only Kosovo, but also all the other neighbors around him," said Gërvalla . .
Among the punitive measures is expected to be the suspension of the work of all working groups for the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). Also, it has been warned that the financing of EU programs will be suspended, the disapproval of projects from the Fund for investment in the Western Balkans, as well as the suspension of meetings at political levels.
European officials have said that these measures were not taken lightly and they may be removed if Kosovo takes steps towards escalating the situation.
Tensions in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, have increased since the end of May. Local Serbs are opposing the new Albanian presidents, who were elected on April 23, in a vote that was boycotted by the Serb population.
