The former NATO spokesman, Jamie Shea, while analyzing the recent developments in the north of Kosovo, where the police were attacked by a Serbian terrorist group led by Milan Radoicic, rejected the proposal of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In an interview for Euronews Albania, he said that he does not agree with KFOR taking control of the north, as according to him, this would send the wrong message to Belgrade.
" No, I do not agree with this, I think that the KFOR forces should continue with patrols and should patrol even more. However, we must keep in mind that the North of Kosovo belongs to Kosovo. It is the territory of Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state and I think it would be a bad sign if the national police of Kosovo, which is a police with different ethnicities and I know that there are many Serbs who have left, but they back to the police.
It is very important that the national police operate in the national territory and build the trust, especially of the Serbs who live there. It must build trust with the local community and cooperate with KFOR.
Placing KFOR in security control, in my opinion, would be a message to Belgrade that the north of Kosovo is not Kosovo's, but an internationally administered neutral area, and I think that this will then increase the pressure from Serbia to withdraw take that part too. The Kosovo Police must work together with KFOR so that the situation calms down gradually ," said Jamie Shea, former NATO spokesperson.
