The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, while calling for the reduction of tensions in the north of Kosovo, said he is ready to meet with the President of Serbia, Aleksandër Vucic.
This statement comes after Serbian President Vučić said on July 6 that he will request a meeting with Stoltenberg after the NATO summit in Vilnius, and then, an urgent session of the United Nations Security Council (UN) due to the situation in Kosovo.
" I am in constant contact with the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and I am definitely ready to meet. We are concerned about the increase in tensions in Kosovo and call on all parties to de-escalate the situation and refrain from any action that could further escalate the situation in the region ," said Stoltenberg.
Speaking at the press conference before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Stoltenberg reiterated that NATO is in Kosovo to guarantee security and stability in the region.
" NATO is there to guarantee security and stability for the people of Kosovo. We carry out our mandate impartially. We increased our presence because of the instability, violence and tensions we have seen for several weeks ," he said.
After the increase of tensions in the north of Kosovo, NATO has engaged 700 additional troops in Kosovo, in addition to the 4,000 troops that are already deployed in Kosovo.
Leaders of the NATO military alliance have gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania. The summit comes at a critical time for security in Europe, as the war in Ukraine is amid a counteroffensive by Kiev.
The leaders of the member countries of the world's largest military organization are expected to discuss a wide range of topics, among which Ukraine's efforts to join NATO will dominate, as well as Sweden's admission to the alliance.
