At the legendary "Azteca" stadium, Mexico triumphed 2-0 over Ecuador in the early hours of Wednesday morning, securing passage to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The match, valid for the round of 16, was scheduled to start at 03:00 Albanian time, but was postponed by an hour due to heavy rain and high electrical activity that affected the Mexican capital.
The home team dominated the game from the start and settled everything within the first half. Julian Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, while Raul Jiménez doubled the lead in the 31st minute, sealing Mexico's qualification.
With the goal scored against Ecuador, Jiménez moves into second place among the top scorers in the history of the Mexican national team with 48 goals, ranking behind Javier "Chicharito" Hernández.
Ecuador finished the match with ten men after Piero Hincapié was sent off in the fifth minute of extra time.
Thanks to this success, Mexico advances to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the England - Democratic Republic of Congo match. The Mexicans continue their impressive performance in this World Cup, with four consecutive victories and as the only team that has not yet conceded a goal.
