History is merciless to those who do not listen...
There comes a point in the life of every society when the government begins to listen only to itself. It is the moment when statistics replace reality, official reports replace the voice of citizens, and propaganda tries to drown out people's concerns. That is where the crisis begins.
In politics, the mistake is repeated with frightening regularity. Every government that wins a few elections begins to believe that the vote is a four-year contract, not a trust that must be renewed every day. Every opposition that loses a few battles begins to think that it is enough to wait for the opponent to wear out, without listening to the voice of the people it claims to represent.
Both are wrong.
Democracy does not only live on election day. It lives every day, in the concerns of citizens, in the anxiety of families, in businesses that close, in young people who leave, in pensioners who count their coins until the end of the month, in the farmer who cannot find a market, and in the parent who wonders whether his child will build a life in Albania or somewhere else.
Politics has only one obligation: to listen to them.
Not to talk to them endlessly. Not to lecture them. Not to label them as manipulated, ignorant, or enemies whenever they disagree with her decisions.
History is merciless to those who do not listen.
In 1990, the communist system in Albania did not fall for lack of propaganda. It fell because it had lost touch with reality. People no longer believed what they were told and the government no longer listened to what was said on the streets.
In 1997, warnings about the pyramid scheme disaster were ignored. When citizens lost their life savings, the state lost control. The price of not listening was tragic.
In 2018, students didn't just protest about university fees. They were a symbol of a long-standing resentment that no one wanted to hear.
The world is also in the same situation.
Britain's referendum on leaving the European Union was a slap in the face to a political elite that had underestimated the concerns of a large segment of its citizens. Donald Trump's victory in 2016 came after millions of Americans felt no one was listening to them anymore. In France, the "Yellow Vest" protests erupted not just over fuel prices, but because citizens felt left out of decision-making.
Even more dramatic was what happened in Sri Lanka in 2022. Warnings of the economic crisis were ignored until citizens took to the streets and the president was forced to leave the country.
The lesson is clear.
People don't protest for the sake of protesting. They protest when they can't find any other way to be heard.
In Albania, the political climate has become so polarized that any criticism is seen as an attack and any protest is interpreted according to party interest. It is a mistake that impoverishes democracy.
The government must understand that a parliamentary majority is not a license to ignore the minority or the voice of citizens. The opposition must understand that it is not enough to denounce; you must also know how to listen. Institutions must restore trust that they are at the service of the public and not politics.
Because there is a line that should never be crossed: the moment when citizens become convinced that no one is listening to them.
When this happens, trust is lost. When trust is lost, institutions are weakened. And when institutions are weakened, no one wins.
Neither the government. Nor the opposition. Nor the state.
Therefore, this is not an appeal to a party or a leader. It is a message to the entire Albanian political class.
Albanian politics must understand that arrogance is not a sign of strength. It is the first sign of weakness.
Get out of the offices. Give up the echo of social networks, the polls that deceive you, and the applause of militants.
Listen to the people.
They are not looking for miracles. They are not looking for anything impossible. They are looking for something much simpler: to be heard.
After all, history has never overthrown governments that listen to their people. It has always overthrown those who believed they could govern without listening to them.
And history, as always, is not wrong./ Pamphlet
