The Ambassador of the United States of America in Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, has commented on the recent developments in Kosovo and the visit of the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg to Serbia, where he emphasized that it is important for the Serbian army to be deployed near the border of Kosovo. In an interview for T7 television, Hovenier said that NATO is the most successful military alliance in the history of mankind and that the mission of the alliance in Kosovo with the responsibility to provide a safe environment has been shown to be very powerful for the international community. He added that he "sleeps comfortably" knowing that there are American soldiers in Kosovo.
" We monitor very closely a number of things that could be a source of instability in the region. And of course, we have often spoken publicly when we were concerned about specific military deployment around the border area. And that continues to be something that we monitor. But I would also say that one of the ways we express how seriously we take this is our long-term commitment to the security of Kosovo, which is best expressed through the KFOR mission and the US participation in it. .We believe that NATO is the most successful military alliance in human history. That's a very, very strong statement, but I stand by it.
And the fact that you have a NATO mission in Kosovo, with the responsibility to provide a calm and safe environment and to enable freedom of movement is an indicator, a very, very strong commitment of the international community and our commitment to the security of Kosovo . The fact that you have several hundred American soldiers as part of this mission in leadership roles supporting this is another reflection of how seriously the United States takes this. So, I still sleep pretty comfortably at night knowing that NATO is there, knowing that there are American soldiers in NATO, and knowing that they are capable of dealing with whatever security threats may arise ," Hovenier said in the interview. for T7.
Among other things, Hovenier has once again reiterated the American position on the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian majority. He said that the Association should be in accordance with the current Constitution of Kosovo and not have its changes, be in accordance with the previous decision of the Constitutional Court, should not have executive authority and should not be the third level of governance.
" There should be no executive authority. It should not be another level of government. Therefore, we - and our European partners - appreciate that this draft statute, which has been submitted to the Government of Kosovo, fulfills these criteria. Fulfill them; is limited in those ways. Therefore, we are confident that it can proceed as such. Something else, which I think I have said before, but I think it is important to repeat: the question of whether this draft statute is constitutional or not, can only be answered by a body. Certainly not from the ambassador of the United States of America or anyone else. This is the responsibility of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo. For this reason, in my view, it is quite important and urgent that the Government completes its process, approves it and takes it forward so that the Court can decide ," said Hovenier.
