Artificial intelligence-created actress Tilly Norwood has caused a stir in the film industry after reports that she is in talks with talent agencies and could be involved in major projects.
Created by Dutch actress and comedian Eline Van der Velden and her company Particle6, Tilly Norwood is a completely digital character, but who appears on social media as a young and talented actress with "girl next door vibes."
She posts photos, comedy videos, and emotional messages as if she were a real person.
"I may be AI, but I'm feeling very real emotions right now," one of the Instagram posts reads.
Tilly's creation has caused outrage among professional actors and their union, SAG-AFTRA, which has publicly condemned its use in the film industry.
"Tilly is not an actress - she is a computer-generated character, trained on the performances of real actors. This is not art, but a threat to the profession," the union said in a statement.
Well-known actors such as Emily Blunt, Natasha Lyonne and Whoopi Goldberg have spoken out against the use of such "actors".
Blunt, in an interview with Variety, said: "This is scary. Please stop. We're being stripped of the human connection on screen."
Meanwhile, Natasha Lyonne has called for a boycott of any agency that collaborates with Norwood, calling the project "crazy and dangerous."
Eline Van der Velden, the character's creator, reacted via Instagram, emphasizing that Tilly was not created to replace real actors, but as an art form.
"Tilly is like drawing a character or writing a role. It should be seen as a genre in its own right, not as a competition for actors," Van der Velden writes.
The controversy comes just two years after the historic 2023 Hollywood strikes, where the use of AI was one of the most hotly debated topics. Unions reached agreements at the time that protected employees from using technology to replace human talent.
