Alarm in New York for the 432 Park skyscraper, located in Manhattan, which is in danger of collapse.
The 96-story, 426-meter-high structure was completed in 2016 and paved the way for the tall but incredibly thin towers of Manhattan's new skyline.
According to independent engineers and court documents reviewed by The New York Times, hundreds of cracks and missing pieces of concrete in the retaining facade indicate far greater than anticipated stress on the building.
Wind and water are to blame. Furthermore, Jose Torero, a structural engineering expert at University College London who has studied construction defects in skyscrapers around the world, told The Times that “a ten-year-old building should not show this level of deterioration.”
He also noted that everything about 432 Park, from its exterior appearance to its height and thinness, has been "pushed to the limit."
With 125 apartments listed for tens of millions of dollars, 432 Park has had stars like Jennifer Lopez, baseball ace Alex Rodriguez and Saudi Arabian retail mogul Fawaz Alhokair among its first tenants.
Without a costly reconstruction costing hundreds of millions of dollars, the "Billionaires' Row" building could become uninhabitable and, over time, pose a hazard to passersby from possible falling debris.
Builders assure that the building is safe, but the Times cites new damage and recurring defects, such as stuck elevators, excessive wind swings and moisture infiltration, while disputes between apartment owners and builders are said to be blocking more intrusive structural work.
