China's foreign minister appears to have disappeared from the public eye, fueling speculation that he is involved in an affair with a popular TV presenter.
Rumors continue to swirl that Qin Gang, known for his aggressive diplomatic approach, may have fallen out with the communist state's leadership after taking up his role only last December.
Qin quickly rose through the ranks of the Communist Party of China, serving as ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United States.
He made a name for himself through his aggressive approach to relations with Western countries. But Qin has not been seen for several weeks. His last public appearance was a meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart on June 25.
This has led some to claim he may have engaged in a relationship with popular TV presenter Fu Xiaotian, 40, who has also not been seen for some time, after a flirtatious interview between them previously surfaced.
China's Foreign Ministry initially declined to comment on the minister's disappearance. However, when he failed to appear at a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Jakarta as he was scheduled to do last week, the ministry said he was "absent for health reasons".
Wang Yi, Qin's predecessor and now Xi Jinping's foreign affairs adviser, stepped in instead, and even took it upon himself to hold talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
At the same time, the public has not even seen the presenter Fu Xiaotian, together with her young son. The Cambridge-educated presenter is one of the most prominent figures on Chinese television and often interviews senior state officials.
Recent incidents have led to rumors circulating, particularly in the Taiwan and Hong Kong press, that the two may have been involved in an affair.
