American actress Denise Richards has secured a protection order against her ex-husband, Aaron Phypers, following allegations of physical violence and repeated threats during their six-year marriage.
In court documents, Richards describes a series of serious incidents of domestic violence, including punches in the face, threats to her life and the search of her personal devices.
According to her testimony, Phypers repeatedly physically abused her, holding her down, banging her head on hard surfaces, and verbally and physically threatening her. She stated that she felt afraid for her life and was hesitant to report earlier because of the constant threats, which, she said, included the possibility of suicide or violence against her by her ex-husband.
Richards cited the period July 4–14 as the latest episode, involving members of Phypers' family in a verbal confrontational situation. In her motion, she asked the court to order Phypers to participate in a 52-week domestic violence intervention program, as well as to cover legal fees and expenses related to the case.
On the other hand, Aaron Phypers reacted a few hours after the court's decision, issuing a public statement to PEOPLE magazine, denying all the accusations against him.
He called Richards' allegations "completely false and deeply hurtful," stressing that he had never physically or emotionally abused her or anyone else. Phypers also stressed that their relationship had been difficult, but had never escalated into abuse.
"I have always tried to approach our marriage with love, patience, and respect," he said in his statement, where he also requested privacy during this period.
Phypers filed for divorce on July 7, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The separation date, according to his documents, is set for July 4, the same date Richards claims one of the most recent tense incidents between them occurred. The lawsuit is still ongoing, and the court is expected to review the allegations and counter-arguments further to make a full ruling on the case.
