Blue Monday, or more simply, the most melancholic day of the year, is today, Monday, January 19. But how did we end up on this special day?

In 2005, Sky Travel launched a campaign around the Blue Moon. The company asked Cardiff University lecturer Cliff Arnall to develop an equation to find the melancholic day of the year.

The lecturer came up with the following equation that takes into account six factors: weather (w), debt (D), time distance from Christmas (T), time since our New Year's goals were failed (Q), and low levels of motivation (M and N).

Is Blue Monday a myth?

The term "Blue Monday" was coined by Cliff Arnall, but recent studies have called his research into question, finding that workers are more likely to be absent due to illness and have reduced productivity on other days in January.

Compared to last week, BrightHR data shows that there will be an increase in the number of employees calling in sick by about 7.6% - a 1.4% increase compared to last year's Blue Monday.

Alan Price, CEO of BrightHR, said: “According to data from BrightHR’s absence management software, the infamous January ‘despair’ could be very real, with employees calling in sick and arriving late to the office at alarming rates. While last year’s Blue Monday didn’t take the title of worst attendance of the year, it did break records for tardiness – with many cases linked to mental health issues.”

What can you do?

Regardless of whether Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year, experts emphasize that we should use this day to connect with friends and colleagues and change our way of thinking.

For example, it is suggested that people take new steps, such as starting a new career or a new hobby, meeting new friends, or embarking on an adventure.

To combat bad moods, health experts recommend a combination of physical exercise, consumption of fruits and vegetables, and vitamin D, which help improve mood.

Quitting or reducing alcohol consumption is also recommended to increase energy levels and improve sleep.

There is also useful advice for companies. Leona Burton, founder of the International Network of Mothers in Business, said that Blue Monday can serve as a “reminder of the importance of mindset, not just in the workplace, but in all areas of life.”

He continued: “Mindset is a powerful tool, and what we focus on expands. By setting clear goals, showing gratitude, and breaking tasks down into small, manageable steps, employees can regain control and a positive attitude.”
