Precisely for this reason, 41 states have decided to sue META, claiming that it has become a destructive addiction. They raise concerns that children under 13 are being given personal information without parental consent.
Meanwhile, a federal lawsuit and a state lawsuit allege that the tech giant intentionally designed functionality into the platform with the intent of killing children and teenagers.
"Their motive is profit, and in an effort to maximize financial gain, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial risks of its social media platforms," the lawsuit reads.
"Children and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health, and social media companies like Meta are to blame," said New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“We share the attorneys general's commitment to providing teens with safe and positive online experiences, and have already introduced over 30 tools to support teens and their families. "We are disappointed that instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create clear, age-appropriate standards for the many apps that teens use, the attorneys general have chosen this path," the spokesperson said in a statement.
