Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded with irony to statements by US President Donald Trump, who said that the United States would take control of the Strait of Hormuz and be paid to guarantee navigation safety.
In a post on the X platform, Araghchi said that Trump is "absolutely right," but added that the country that guarantees the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has always been Iran.
" The US President is absolutely right. Whoever guarantees the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service. Iran has always been the guardian of the strait and will remain so forever ," the Iranian top diplomat wrote.
Araghchi also sarcastically commented on Trump's statement about imposing a 20% tariff on cargo passing through Hormuz.
" 20% is, of course, excessive. We will be fair ," he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Joint Maritime Information Center, which operates under the US Navy, announced that a naval blockade against Iran will come into effect from 23:00 (Greek time) on July 14.
According to the announcement, the blockade will apply to all ships, regardless of the flag they fly, and will include the entire Iranian coastline, ports and oil terminals.
However, US authorities clarified that the free passage of ships to non-Iranian destinations through the Strait of Hormuz will not be impeded. Ships carrying humanitarian aid will also be allowed to pass, after undergoing appropriate inspections.
