Bruce Willis' wife has spoken about the first moments when the Hollywood actor showed the first signs of dementia.
Married to him in 2009, she says that it all started with stuttering, but no one thought he was suffering from the disease.
Guesting on Katie Couric's "Next Question" podcast, the 47-year-old says she would never have thought it was a symptom of early-onset dementia.
"Bruce had suffered from stuttering as a child, and suddenly it came back," she recalled.
Based on her painful experience, she appeals to everyone not to ignore the signs.
"If at the age of 40, 50 or 60 you see a person suddenly changing – in language, behavior or personality – remember that this is a sign that something is not going right in the brain and needs to be investigated... words no longer came naturally to them.
"He was confused, and I felt confused too. I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't define it. You know the person you love better than anyone else: so you have to go to the doctors, to seek answers," she says.
Bruce Willis, 70, suffers not only from frontotemporal dementia, but also from primary progressive aphasia – a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects language and impairs the ability to communicate.
Due to numerous problems, the Hollywood star was placed in a nursing home under the care of doctors and specialists.
