The saddest news of yesterday was undoubtedly the sudden departure from the life of the iconic actor Matthew Perry. Los Angeles Police Department officers found the 54-year-old actor dead in a bathtub at his home, and detectives are investigating.
Perry all these years fought to save his life. He had to enter rehab 15 times and spent $9 million trying to get "clean" from drugs and alcohol.
He escaped death twice by 'a hair'. For two weeks he was in a coma.
Perry had already detailed his battle with drug and alcohol addiction in his autobiography Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing, which was released last November.
In 2019, he narrowly escaped death after a ruptured colon due to an opioid overdose. He described the moment his men rushed him to a Los Angeles hospital, where doctors had said he was given only a 2% chance of surviving that night.
For two weeks he was in a coma and when he woke up, he found that he had been fitted with a colostomy bag which he had to wear for the next nine months. Just two years later he came close to death again while in a rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland.
Doctors gave him a sedative that interacted with the opioids in his damaged body, causing his heart to stop beating. They managed to 'revive' him, but eight ribs were broken during the resuscitation.
The actor, after overcoming the problem, shared with the public what happened and was forced to give up a leading role in the 2021 film "Don't Look Up", where he would have had the opportunity to be on the set with Meryl Streep and other famous actors.
His heart stopped beating for 5 minutes
"I did CPR and the guy who saved my life broke eight ribs trying to keep me alive," Matthew Perry said in a television interview.
"I was operated on because I had stomach pain and they gave me propofol. My heart stopped beating for five minutes," Perry said, referring to the anesthesia used to undergo the surgery.
"So you were dead for five minutes?" Colbert asked him.
"Well, no, I wasn't dead, but my heart stopped for five minutes," replied Chandler of 'Friends.'
"What is the difference between this and a straight line?" asked the presenter.
"I don't know," Perry admitted.
"They didn't want to tell you because there is no difference between these two," the host replied.
