A significant turning point has marked the trial for the murder of 13-year-old Albanian Aurora Tila in Italy. Her ex-boyfriend, now 17, has admitted for the first time in the Court of Appeal that he was the one who killed the girl, pushing her from the balcony of their apartment in Piacenza on October 25, 2024.
The young man, who was 15 years old at the time of the incident, was sentenced in the first instance to 17 years in prison by the Juvenile Court. During the Appeals hearing, he changed his position, taking responsibility for the crime and apologizing for the act committed, as well as for the fact that he had delayed admitting guilt.
His admission was made through a spontaneous statement from the juvenile prison in Catanzaro, where he is serving his sentence.
Lawyer Emilio Malaspina, representing the victim's mother, Morena Corbellini, described the confession as a moment that closes an important part of the process.
"With his confession, a circle is closed. We hope that the Court will confirm the first instance decision, which has determined a fair sentence ," he declared.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 10, when, after discussions between the General Prosecutor's Office and the defense, a final decision is expected to be made. The court has also requested a report on the young man's behavior while serving his sentence, as other problematic episodes have been reported against him.
How did the crime happen?
According to the investigation, on the day of the incident, the 15-year-old pushed Aurora off the balcony of the apartment. The prosecution claims that when the girl tried to escape by holding onto the railing, he hit her with his knee, forcing her to fall into the void.
The first-instance decision was based on the testimony of people who saw the scene and heard the 13-year-old's screams, as well as other evidence that the court deemed irrefutable.
Investigations revealed harassment and threats
According to the investigative file, Aurora had decided to end her relationship with the young man a few weeks before the incident, but he continued to follow and harass her.
Among the evidence administered by the prosecution was a message sent by the defendant, which read: "My revenge plan begins now, Wednesday, October 9th at 02:50."
The file also included conversations that Aurora had had with ChatGPT, where she sought advice about the relationship and asked: "According to you, should I leave him?" . The court assessed that these communications reflected her state of fear and insecurity, consistent with the accounts she had made to family members, friends and the social services educator.
Investigators also said that the day before the crime, the young man had told another person that he intended to kill Aurora. According to the indictment, he also took with him a screwdriver, which was later seized by authorities.
In his last messages to his daughter, he wrote: "Tomorrow is the last time, then never again" and "I promise that after Friday's release I will never look for you again."
According to the Italian prosecution, while Aurora believed that the final meeting would end the conflict between them, the young man had previously decided to kill her.
The guilty plea on appeal comes several months after his conviction in the first instance and is considered an important development in the judicial process.
