Renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu has been thrust back into the spotlight after being charged with rape by actress Charlotte Arnould. The news was announced by the Paris Departmental Criminal Court and reported by French broadcaster BFM TV. If found guilty, the 75-year-old faces up to 20 years in prison.
This is not the first time Depardieu has faced justice. In a previous trial, he was found guilty of sexual assault and sentenced to 18 months in prison, a decision the actor has appealed. The new case relates to allegations by Arnould, who accuses the actor of raping her twice in August 2018, in his Paris apartment.
Initially, after a nine-month investigation, the actress's lawsuit was dismissed. But Arnould brought the charges back, this time as a civil plaintiff. In December 2020, a judge deemed that there was serious and consistent evidence, leading to charges of rape and sexual assault. The Paris prosecutor's office requested a formal indictment in August 2024.
Depardieu has been accused of inappropriate behavior by more than 20 other women. However, most of these cases have been dismissed due to lack of evidence or the statute of limitations.
In May of this year, the actor was convicted of another sexual assault case during the filming of the film Les Volets Verts (2021). He received an 18-month suspended sentence, while also being registered in the criminal record for violating the rules of conduct.
This new trial is expected to be one of Depardieu's most difficult legal battles, with international media closely following every development in the case.
