American actor Michael B. Jordan recently revealed that after playing one of the most difficult and important roles of his career, he turned to therapy to cope with the emotional impact of the character. The interview took place on “CBS Sunday Morning”, where the 38-year-old spoke openly about the experience he had after playing the role of Erik Killmonger in the 2018 film “Black Panther”.
Killmonger, a Black Ops mercenary and cousin of T'Challa (played by the late actor Chadwick Boseman), is the film's villain. He attempts to conquer Wakanda, but is ultimately defeated and killed. Jordan admitted that after filming wrapped, it was difficult to emotionally detach from the character.
"It stuck in my mind for a while. You know, I went to therapy and talked about it. I found a way to relax, I think at that point I was still learning that I had to relax from the character," the actor confessed.
According to Jordan, the therapy was not only helpful in coping with the consequences of playing Killmonger, but also became a broader process of self-reflection and personal self-discovery.
"It developed into a broader conversation and self-discovery," he added, emphasizing that today he considers therapy essential and does not hesitate to recommend it, especially for men.
Jordan added:
“I think it’s good for them to go and talk. It’s something I’m not ashamed of at all and I’m very proud of. It’s definitely helped me try to be a good communicator and a well-rounded person, inside and out.”
For the actor, the experience with Killmonger showed that even the most powerful and dramatic roles can have a deep emotional impact, and that understanding the boundaries between professional and personal life is essential for mental health.
