An unprecedented moment is unfolding in a California courtroom, where Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared to testify in a case that could forever change the way social platforms are legally treated.
The trial is considered historic, as it is the first time a CEO of a technology giant faces a jury over claims that social media has negatively impacted children's mental health.
At the heart of the issue: youth safety
The lawsuit focuses on the claim that platforms like Instagram and YouTube are intentionally designed to be addictive, keeping young people engaged for hours, despite the known risks to their mental health.
The plaintiff, identified by the initials KGM, claims that she started using Instagram and YouTube as a child and that early exposure has led to serious consequences.
Earlier, Instagram's CEO also testified, acknowledging that the platform can be problematic but denying that it is clinically addictive.

Attorney and founder of the Social Media Victims Law Center, Matt Bergman, called the trial a national turning point.
"This is more than a legal milestone, it is a moment that families across the country have been eagerly awaiting," he said.
According to him, for the first time, a senior executive of a technology company will have to account under oath for decisions that, according to the lawsuit, have put the well-being of children at risk.

While YouTube remains a defendant in the case, its CEO will not testify. The jury's decision is expected to have far-reaching implications, not just for Meta, but for the entire global social media industry.
