Just a few months before the World Cup, the Argentine Football Federation is facing corruption charges brought by the Milei government, which, through the Ministry of Justice, has requested explanations regarding suspected accounting irregularities amounting to approximately 40 million euros between 2017 and 2023.
Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), while on vacation in Mar de Plata, distanced himself from all the accusations, declaring that he was calm and that the accusations were a media fabrication. Just a few months before the World Cup, the AFA risks being placed under special administration if it does not respond by January 20. However, according to the Federation, all the disputed accounting periods were approved under the supervision of officials from the General Inspectorate of Justice and were submitted “on time and correctly.”
Tapia: "I am not under investigation; there are two realities..."
Tapia has denied all the allegations and, as reported by La Nacion, has issued the following statement: “ The only truth is reality. It is objectively false to claim that the AFA has absconded, that it has not reported the change of its jurisdiction or that this change is illegal .” Although Tapia claims to be calm, he is currently also accused of other economic crimes following a complaint by the Revenue and Customs Control Agency, along with his right-hand man Pablo Tovigino. Prosecutor Navas Rial has accused them of embezzling 19 billion dollars. The AFA issued a statement specifying that all accounting documents were approved under the direction of the General Inspectorate of Justice and were submitted within an appropriate timeframe. With the World Cup just a few months away, the Argentine Football Association has been called upon to defend itself against corruption allegations.
