Didier Deschamps will lead the France national team for the last time tonight, in the challenge against England for third place in the 2026 World Cup.
After 15 years at the helm of the "Roosters", the French coach aims to end his era with a prestigious victory. However, history is not on his side. A statistic from the last 40 years shows that French coaches have rarely left their last match successfully.
In fact, only one coach has managed to end the adventure in the ideal way. It is Aimé Dxhekit, who in 1998 won 3-0 against Brazil in the World Cup final, leaving as world champion and national hero.
For the rest of the coaches, the last match was synonymous with disappointment:
Henri Michel (1988): France – Cyprus 1-1
Michel Platini (1992): France – Denmark 1-2
Gerard Houllier (1993): France – Bulgaria 1-2, one of the most dramatic defeats in the history of French football
Aimé Jackie (1998): France – Brazil 3-0
Roger Lemaire (2002): Denmark – France 2-0
Jacky Santini (2004): France – Greece 0-1
Raymond Domenech (2010): South Africa – France 2-1, at the end of a World Cup accompanied by player rebellion
Loren Blank (2012): Spain – France 2-0
Now it's Didier Deschamps' turn. The coach who led France back to the World Cup title in 2018 has the chance to follow Jack's example and close his chapter with a triumph over England.
It remains to be seen whether Deschamps will break this unfortunate statistic again, or whether he too will join the list of coaches who have ended their adventure on the France bench without a win. The answer will come tonight, in a duel that is expected to be filled with emotions and symbolism.
