
A video making the rounds in European media shows a horrific road accident in Romania that has shocked all of Greece.
It is a van with fans of the Greek team PAOK Thessaloniki, who were traveling to France to watch the match against Lyon in the Europa League, which is apparently involved in a fatal collision on the highway near the city of Lugoj.
The toll is tragic, 7 people lost their lives and 3 others were seriously injured in hospital. All the fans were Greek citizens, aged 25 to 30. Five of the victims were from Alexandria and Imathias, two from Katerini, and three from Thessaloniki. According to information, still unconfirmed, at least one of the victims is suspected to be an Albanian originally from Korça, with the initials VP, writes "Top Channel".
According to Romanian authorities, the van attempted to overtake a tanker truck, but while returning to its lane, it first collided with it and then veered onto the opposite side of the road, where it collided with another truck. A total of four vehicles were involved in the accident.
Six of the victims died at the scene, while another died during transport to the hospital. Two of the injured are in critical condition, while a third has minor injuries and was the one who notified authorities about the accident.
Emergency helicopters were unable to intervene due to poor weather conditions, while the injured were taken to the Lugoj city hospital.
The Greek Foreign Ministry and the Greek Embassy in Bucharest are in constant contact with the Romanian authorities, to identify the victims and support the families. The PAOK club has declared a state of mourning and announced that it will cover all costs for the return of the bodies and assistance to the injured.
Meanwhile, the request to cancel the match has not been accepted by the European Football Association.
