Soccer player Mario Pineida, 33, was shot dead in the port city of Guayaquil on Wednesday, his team said. Guayaquil has become a hotbed of violence by gangs linked to drug trafficking, and several soccer players in Ecuador have been targeted in recent months.

Pineida was part of the Ecuador national team during the 2018 and 2022 World Cup qualifiers. He also played for Fluminense in 2022.

In a post on 'X', his club, Barcelona SC, said it "announces with deep sadness that it has been officially informed of the death of player Mario Pineida, an event that occurred following an attack against him" in Guayaquil.

Pineda's death was confirmed by Ecuador's Interior Ministry, which said it has assigned a special investigative unit to the case.

The 'Primicias' portal reported that Pineida was attacked by two people riding motorcycles, who opened fire on him, his mother and another woman.

In September, three players from Ecuador's second division were killed, one of whom was suspected of being involved in sports betting. A month later, local footballer Bryan Angula was wounded by gunfire.

Ecuador, once one of the safest countries in Latin America, has become a major transit hub for cocaine between major producers in Colombia and Peru and consumers around the world.

Car bombings, shootings and extortion have been on the rise in Guayaquil, which recorded 1,900 murders between January and September this year, the highest number in Ecuador.
