The coach of the "Red and Black" national team, Sylvio Mendes Campos Junior, gave an interview to the Spanish daily "AS" where he presented his vision for football and the opinion formed on the Iberian rivals of Group B in Euro 2024.
Sylvinho has appreciated the predecessors on the bench of Albania, while he does not rule out a surprise in Germany.
-How will Albania be presented at Euro 2024?
We are focused after playing a few friendlies before heading to Germany. In the European, we will face Italy, Croatia and then Spain. Nothing important. In the last match, we will see how both teams will fare.
- What does it mean to you to be among the best in Europe?
It depends on the point of view. We have done a lot of work to be here. We will face strong rivals, but maybe this is the price we won by cutting a ticket to the European.
- Does it seem like a miracle when you see Albania among the best in Europe?
I really appreciate your words. It was a colossal job of many people.
-Unlike many other coaches, you have decided to live in Tirana.
I think that we have done well in this regard, because this is the only way we can get to know the local culture better. Community integration is very important to me.
-In recent years we have seen many surprises such as Greece, Leicester, Girona and Leverkusen... do you think that Albania can be one of them in this European?
In recent years, football has developed a lot. New tactics, technology and physical form has changed a lot. To be clear, the big teams remain like that, but if you work hard, you can narrow the differences a bit.
-What can you tell us about Spain?
I love everything from Spain. As a state and as a nation.
-But the year 2010 has already passed...
Spain remains Spain. It has the beautiful game in its DNA. It is one of the most difficult national teams to beat.
- In the last World Cup, Russia and Morocco have shown that by closing in on defense, they can be defeated.
Hard to say how Spain can be beaten. We must prepare well and, as I said above, we must do everything to narrow the differences. I think if you play defense you can't win, to do something like that you have to attack.
- Regarding the players, do you think that Yamal will have a career like that of Messi?
Let's not make such strong comparisons. Someone who has played alongside Leo for several years is telling them. Yamal has everything to do like Messi, but still has a way to go. I see it as a big risk.
-You played for several years in Barcelona, what do you think about the situation created by Xavi's departure?
We are talking about a great personality and coach. This is shown by the title won in La Liga a year ago. Barcelona is a big club and the pressure is high. I think in football no one has much patience and no one looks at legacy. In this world, it is easy to talk about failures, but never about successes. Currently, 23 players are playing with Albania, who have worked with Panuc and Rejan. I want to thank them for the work done," said Sylvio.
In Group B of Euro 2024, Albania faces Italy on June 15, Croatia on June 19 and Spain on June 24.
