Trump gaffe at NATO summit, confuses Zelensky with Putin

During a press conference, Donald Trump appeared to confuse Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with Russian President Vladimir Putin, before attempting to correct his statement.

US President Donald Trump made a gaffe during a press conference at the NATO summit when he appeared to confuse Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Footage of the moment was widely shared on social media.

Positioned next to Zelensky while answering reporters' questions, Trump gestured toward the Ukrainian president and said: "Are there any questions for President Putin, please?"

The statement drew laughter from the audience. Afterward, Trump tried to turn the slip into a comment about the Russian president.

“Is there a question for President Putin, not for Zelensky, but for Putin?” he said, again pointing to the Ukrainian president. “What would you like to ask him? Because today I will be talking to him.”

When a reporter reminded him that a year earlier he had called Putin a "paper tiger," Trump insisted on his proposal.

"No, no, ask a question not about Zelensky, but about Putin. Today I will talk to him. Ask me a good question, a difficult question," he said.

A journalist then asked him: "When will this war end?"

Trump responded: "That's a very good question. I don't think I've ever asked him that before. I will."

Recall that US President Donald Trump met during the NATO summit with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, where they discussed the war and peace talks with Russia. Meanwhile, during his speech, the former US president revealed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had expressed a desire for a meeting in Moscow. While explaining that he had tried to put himself in the position of the Ukrainian president, Trump directly addressed Zelensky if he was willing to go to Moscow for talks.

Zelensky's response was immediate and caused loud laughter in the hall. With sharp irony, the Ukrainian leader described this possibility as very difficult and dangerous, due to the fact that there are many Ukrainian drones there, bringing to mind the constant air strikes that the Ukrainian military has carried out on Russian territory.

After this joke, Trump confirmed that it is indeed difficult to travel to the Russian capital in these conditions. The situation was accompanied by interventions from the journalists present, who began to ask if there would be an invitation for President Putin to Washington.
