The unfortunate events that took place on March 17 after the attack of a group of Trabzonspor ultra fans on Fenerbahçe players have already had their first consequences. The Turkish club announced on Monday afternoon that it has called an Extraordinary General Assembly on April 2 to address the possibility of leaving the Turkish Super League.
In this way, the team located in the city of Istanbul can join the biggest club in that part. That is, those teams that, for various reasons, do not play in the league of the country they belong to.
According to the media 'BPT', one of the main options that Fenerbahçe is considering, in addition to League 1 in France, Eredivise in Holland and Jupiler Pro League in Belgium, is the transition to La Liga.
However, there are some legal obstacles that would prevent the Turkish club from entering the Spanish league. According to the Sports Law, "the only non-Spanish competitors that can play in the Spanish championship are Andorran clubs". In fact, this was one of the major obstacles that Barcelona could face if one day, Catalonia becomes independent from Spain.
Monaco as the clearest example
However, in other races they are much more open to this type of situation. The most obvious example is Monaco, one of the leading clubs in Ligue 1 in France. With less than 40,000 inhabitants, Monte Carlo does not have enough teams to form its own league. For this reason, the club from 'The Principality' has been allowed since 1924 to compete in the French championship, which it has been able to win up to eight times.
Monaco has always been considered one of the great fiscal 'havens' in Europe and the club, in terms of signings and contracts, has benefited greatly. Therefore, it was forced to locate its headquarters in France to adhere to the fiscal policies of the French country.
The most rebellious Wales
With the establishment of the Premier League in 1992, Wales created its own independent local league and was given the option to select its own teams if they agreed to join. Swansea, Cardiff, Newport County, Wrexham, Colowyn Bay and Merthyr Town decided to reject the proposal to remain part of the English league.
All these teams claimed at the time competitive reasons, as well as geographical reasons, for not joining the Welsh league. Currently, none are playing in the Premier League and, in 2019, Colowin Bay decided to move to Wales.
MLS, in the purest NBA style
After the NBA's expansion in 1995, the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies, both from Canada, joined the American basketball league. Six years later, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis and, since then, the Raptors are the only franchise outside the United States to play in the NBA.
The same thing happens in the MLS. In fact, there are as many as three Canadian teams currently active in the American League: Toronto FC, Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps. The main reason these teams competed in Major League Soccer was the late creation of the Canadian Premier League in 2019.
The most extreme cases
There are many teams that, due to political or geographical situations, have been forced to move to a league outside the borders of their country. One of the most extreme cases is that of the Sheriff of Tiraspol, Real Madrid's rival in the group stage of the Champions League in the 2021-2022 season, which, by the way, they managed to defeat the Spanish team at the "Santiago Bernabeu" with the result 1-2
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Moldova declared independence. However, the Transnistrian region did not accept this resolution and remains stuck in the pre-war situation. The sheriff of Tiraspol belongs to the city in question. Therefore, faced with the impossibility of forming a league in a country that is only internationally recognized by Russia, it joined the Moldovan championship. Paradoxically, Sherif is the main dominator of the Moldovan league with 21 titles won.
Another of the most curious cases is that of Busingen, the only German club that plays outside the leagues made up of the DFB. Busingen is a small German town located on Swiss soil that, after its re-establishment in 1947, joined the Swiss Football Association.
