The Ukrainian high jump athlete Jaroslava Mahučik has dedicated the Olympic gold medal to the athletes killed by Russia in her country.
The war began in February 2022 and shows no signs of ending.
Ukraine had considered boycotting the Paris Games after the International Olympic Committee said the Russians could compete as neutrals if they could prove they did not support the conflict.
Only 15 Russian athletes finished in Paris, so Ukraine decided to compete, and world record holder Mahuchik was happy about it.
" This medal is important, but Russia killed people in my country ," the 22-year-old told reporters.
" Almost 500 athletes died in the war and will never be able to compete. They will never celebrate, they will never feel this atmosphere, so I am especially happy for this medal. It is for all of them ", she emphasized.
