The Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix brings two very different stories for Ferrari drivers this weekend. On one side is Lewis Hamilton, who returns to the Hungaroring as the most dominant driver in the history of this track, while on the other is Charles Leclerc, who seeks to erase a negative statistic and finally find success in Budapest.
The Briton has built a special relationship with this circuit. With 8 wins, 9 pole positions and 12 podiums, Hamilton holds the record as the most successful driver in the history of the Hungaroring. For him, this track is almost a second home.
One of the most memorable moments of his career came in Hungary in 2019. Mercedes decided to take a risk with a second pit stop, putting in fresh tyres and asking Hamilton to chase Max Verstappen for the win. The Briton launched a spectacular comeback, lowering lap times after lap and making a decisive overtake.
" Every lap was like a qualifying lap ," Hamilton declared after that race, describing the incredible pace that gave him victory.
On the other hand, for Charles Leclerc, the Hungaroring remains a major hurdle. The Monaco driver has never won at this track and has never been on the podium. Recent years have brought him some painful disappointments.
The most recent case in memory is the 2022 race, when Leclerc was in direct competition for victory. A wrong strategic decision by Ferrari, with the choice of hard tires, cost him dearly. The tires did not perform as expected, Verstappen overtook him twice, while a spin on the track finally removed him from the battle for first place. In the end, the Monegasque finished only sixth.
Even last season, despite starting the race from pole position, Leclerc failed to exploit his advantage and ended the Hungarian Grand Prix in fourth place.
Ferrari arrives in Budapest after positive signals received at Spa, where it showed that it can compete with the leading teams. However, the Hungaroring will be another important test to understand the real level of the red car.
For Hamilton, this track is a place of great memories and historic triumphs. For Leclerc, it is a personal challenge, an opportunity to break a taboo that has haunted him for years.
The two Ferrari drivers have different objectives, but a common goal: to bring the Italian team back into the spotlight. Rosso fans hope that Hungary will be the stage where Leclerc finally writes his story, while Hamilton continues his legend in Budapest.
