The Disciplinary Commissions of the Belgian Football Federation have taken a very special decision, which creates a dangerous precedent for the future. The match between Anderlecht and Genk will be replayed due to a wrong decision of the referee in the execution of a penalty.
The match, played on 23 December, ended 2-1 to Anderlecht, but in the end Genk missed a penalty with Heinen, who saw Shmajkell punch the ball away. Genk's Jira Sor then pushed the ball into the net, but with VAR it was proven that he had entered the area before the shot, so the goal was disallowed. However, two Anderlecht players had entered the field before time and in this case, according to the regulation, the penalty had to be shot again.
The resumption of the game by the referee with the goalkeeper reinstated has brought the protests of Genk who addressed the Disciplinary Commissions securing a decision in their favor today and is already waiting to learn the date when the match will be replayed.
On the other hand, Anderlehti reacted harshly, calling the decision senseless and making it clear that they would appeal it in every possible instance. "The Disciplinary Committee practically says that from now on, any mistake by a referee can be sanctioned as a foul against the rules of the game. And therefore each referee will need much more time to make decisions on the field of play, with serious consequences. We are all shocked by the decision," said Valter Damen, Anderleht's club lawyer.
