Australian umpire, Shaun Evans

FIFA has opened an investigation into Australian referee Shaun Evans after a gesture made during the Germany-Curacao match, which sparked debate and reactions on social media.

Evans was filmed making a circle with his thumb and index finger, while his other three fingers were extended. Although the gesture is usually used as a sign of approval, in recent years it has been linked by some groups and observers to white supremacist symbolism and the slogan "White Power."

After numerous online reactions, FIFA took immediate action by changing the way the VAR room was broadcast. In subsequent matches, VAR referees were no longer filmed facing the camera, but only while monitoring the action on the control screens.

Suspicions that the gesture was linked to hateful ideology have led FIFA to launch an official verification procedure, giving the Australian referee the opportunity to clarify the circumstances and purpose of his action.

Meanwhile, the "Fare" organization, which monitors racist or discriminatory chants, flags, and symbols at international football matches, has reacted strongly to the incident.

" It is clear that this referee should no longer have any role in this World Cup ," the organization declared, describing the gesture as "neo-Nazi."

FIFA has not yet issued an official comment on the case, nor has there been any public response from Football Federation Australia or the Australian Referees Association.
