Following the death of Egnatia striker Rafael Duamena during the match between Egnatia and Partizan last Saturday, the Spanish Association of Cardiology (SEC) and the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC) have explained what an implantable automatic defibrillator (ICD) is and that these devices save lives.
"Unfortunately, in many cases, cardiology fails to detect all cardiac events. However, in what we discover, it is essential to follow the cardiologist's advice", said Dr. Injacio Lozano, president of the Spanish Association of Cardiology and Representative of the SEC in the Spanish Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Council (CERCP). According to Dr. Antonio Aso Abadia, head of the Arrhythmia Section at the "Miguel Servet" hospital and the Arrhythmia Institute in Zaragoza, the former Egnatia forward had an "ICD" fitted while he was part of Real Zaragoza.

" I was adamant in his recommendation for defibrillator placement as an interim step for future follow-up in the event of frequent recurrence of his arrhythmias. Although in that case we managed to convince him, later he asked his doctors in Switzerland to remove the defibrillator , "said the specialist.
What is an ICD? - According to doctors, the implantable defibrillator (ICD) is a device similar to a pacemaker.
Its mission is to restore the normal rhythm of the heart by applying an electric shock, in case of dangerous cardiac arrhythmias. The implanted defibrillator is recommended in patients who have suffered a heart attack, as well as those who have suffered a loss of consciousness or are at high risk of suffering a dangerous cardiac arrhythmia.
